The start of the election from 2030 will need at least 1000 members / day

Previously, on April 16, the Commission supported the proposal of the non -belonging Member of the Group, which provides that the list of candidates in the Saeima election may be submitted to a law registered in accordance with a statutory law, established not later than one year before the Saeima elections and has not less than 1000 members. This means that the number of members should be doubled, as this threshold is currently 500 members.

Today, MEPs supported the Commission’s own proposal to increase the threshold from 2030, when the next Saeima elections are expected. This means that these amendments will not apply to the next parliamentary elections in the fall of 2026.

The issue was supported without wide discussions.

At the end of the meeting, the Commission supported amendments to the Saeima Election Law at second reading and is expected to be reviewed at the Saeima sitting on 22 May. Today, the Commission had to look at the remaining 23 of the total 43 proposals in order to move the issue further. None of the proposals had a very wide debate, with much of the amendments were editorial clarifications.

As reported, the Ministry of Justice (TM) has stated in an information report on solutions to supervise political parties that their members are currently not entered in the Register of Political Parties and it is not possible to verify that the information specified in the members of the Members’ Register corresponds to the data of the Register of Natural Persons or whether all persons listed in the list are realistic.

As TM emphasizes, the problem is not only that members of the lists are not verified, but there is no control over, explaining whether the persons in the lists are indeed members of the party. It is also not verifying whether the news is actually updated in the members of the members.

The ministry recalls that only political parties with no less than 200 Latvian citizens can operate in Latvia, but at a political party with more than 400 members, not less than half must be Latvian citizens.
