The Sportmuseum should open its doors in 2028
A non -ending story now seems to go towards a good end. The idea of a sports museum has been haunting a wide variety of bodies for decades, but without something tangible. On Thursday morning Sports Minister Georges Mischo (CSV) presented the definitive project. From spring 2026, the excavators will roll in the new development area of the « Rout Lëns ». There are still two years of construction until the opening, so that the new sports museum opens its gates in spring 2028.
In one Interview with the LW Had Mischo in October 2022, at that time still explained as mayor of Esch/Alzette: « Since 1986 it has been talking about this museum, I wanted it to come to Esch. » After all, the starting signal for a first project was in 2017, but it did not really come out of the starting blocks. The selected location in the Escher suburb of Lankel turned out to be unacceptable. For a long time it was not known that it was a « zone non-Aedificandi », that is, a non-buildable zone.
Therefore, an alternative location was tried and it was finally found last autumn. In the middle of the new development area of the former industrial zone of the « Rout Lëns » are the listed turbine halls.

A corresponding renovation will create the new museum on 2,500 square meters. As Mischo emphasized, they looked around similar institutions in Cologne and Nice to collect ideas on how the local museum can be built and operated.
This is how the Rout Lëns changes
Incidentally, the museum officially listens to the bulky name « Center d’Afertise, de Rencontre et d’échase sur le sport et son patrimoine ». This also says that it is not just a matter of pure exhibition rooms, but also events such as conferences or advertising events can take place there.
Georges Mischo also underlined that the premises will also be available to the local associations. The minister commented on the cost: « At the moment we are 28.6 million, so that you can realistically assume that we will end up with around 30 million euros. »
