Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Thursday asked his compatriots forgiveness after new corruption charges.

« I apologize to the citizens, » said visibly shocked by Sánchez reporters in Madrid, admitting that the new discoveries filled him with « great bitterness and deep sadness. » This 53-year-old announced an external audit of the finance of his socialist working party (PSOE), as well as the reorganization of the party executive body.

Just under two hours earlier, his party colleague Santos Cerdán resigned as party secretary for alleged involvement in corruption scandal. Cerdán also announced that he would give up the position of MP in Parliament.

According to a report of police units for the UCO corruption, he allegedly received a bribe during the award of public contracts. Cerdán, 56, still claims to be innocent.

Various corruption scandals have been plaguing the left -wing minority government in Spain, which has been in power for seven years.

Last week, the Spanish Conservative People’s Party (PP) invited the « Mafia or Democracy » in Madrid to new elections at a rally under the slogan « Mafia or Democracy », and the authorities estimated the number of tens of thousands gathered.
