The Socialists in the European Parliament want a penalty for Vucic on Red Square
The European Parliamentary Group of Socialists in the European Parliament – the second in numbers after that of the EPP, called on Thursday the European Commission to revise the negotiation process for EU EU membership after President Alexander Vucic did not listen to the Brussels Council not to go to Moscow for the parade on May 9.
« By participating in Putin’s military parade, Serbian president has once again shown a blatant neglect of EU values and principles. Therefore, the C&D group calls on the European Commission to begin discussions to review Serbia’s accession process. In its current state, the country cannot reliably continue on the road to EU membership. »
This is what the Croatian MEP, Tonino Picola, who is from the Socialist Group, said in a statement in the European Parliament.
Prior to the parade, EU foreign policy representative Kaya Kalas warned the 9 countries negotiating EU memberment with Brussels not to travel to Moscow.
EU warned the leaders of nine countries not to step in Moscow on May 9
The recommendation did not listen to Serbian president and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who appeared with Putin on the rostrum in Red Square.
« There is no way to continue in the usual way. The EU must immediately stop pleased with President Vucic. The story has taught us that such an approach is ineffective and dangerous. The EU has overwhelmed to Putin for too long and now we all pay the price. Let’s not repeat the same mistake with Vuchic. Socialists. |

On Tuesday in Belgrade was the President of the European Council Antonio Costa. He told Vucic that
« The EU remains strongly engaged in the accession of Serbia as a stable, peaceful and prosperous country after dealing with the inheritance of the past and chose to embrace its democratic and European future. »
Costa: The future of Serbia is in the EU, the ball is in your field
Costa asked Serbia to condemn the « brutal invasion of Russia in Ukraine » and to support Ukraine « to achieve a fair and lasting peace » and reminded Vucic that the EU expects candidate countries to apply the sanctions imposed by the Union of Russia.
However, he said he believed that the future of Serbia was in the EU and urged the government to make reforms that guarantee media freedom and changes in election legislation so that it could open a new group of negotiating chapters on the way to membership.
