The school premises lasted only for 22 years


The latest building of Hólabrekkuskóli is closed due to major maintenance and reconstruction. The estimated total cost is about ISK 500 million.

The completion date will be in April 2026 and the premises will be put into operation in the fall. This youngest part of school buildings on the site was put into operation in 2002 and has therefore only lasted for 22 years.

In the City of Reykjavik’s response to the request of Morgunblaðið, it is stated that this is the first phase of construction at Hólabrekkuskóli, which consists of four houses. The first phase of the project covers the southernmost building of the school, which is also the youngest of the four houses.

Initially, it was considered sufficient to renew the window system, fix the roof and improve the acoustics. In the latter stages, the request from the School and Leisure Division came to take advantage of the opportunity and update the interior of the building in accordance with the requirements of modern teaching. The Council’s suggestions were designed for bedridden homes for each group, with group rooms between the homes, a larger natural science and a special work room for teachers.

Flat roof built up

An aluminum window system will be replaced and the house isolated and clad on the outside to access the cold bridge which has led to moisture. The flat roof will be built up with a new roof slope to reduce the risk of leaks. A new ventilation with thermal processing will be installed. The original architect of the building is Gylfi Guðjónsson and Félags ehf. This cartoonist is now called Drawing – Architects’ cartoonist and is Jóhann Einar Jónsson architect registered main designer at the reconstruction of the house. The contractor who handles the construction is Tindhagur ehf.
