The school merger in the station district becomes a reality – but the criticism remains

For the 26th time, Colette Mart (DP) spoke out on Friday morning to comment on the annual school organization in the city of Luxembourg in the council meeting. But the tone that struck me was often different. » In principle, it rates positively that the merger of the two schools is now becoming a reality – after all, it had campaigned for it for years. And yet there is a bitter aftertaste.

As Schulzöffe Paul Galles (CSV) confirmed to the « Luxemburger Word » in mid -May, the merger will take place in the coming autumn. A decision that is finally implemented after years of discussion – but the circumstances continue to make debates.

The merger of the two primary schools in Rue Michel Welter and Rue de Commerce has been on the political agenda for more than a decade. As early as February 2021, parents expressed massive criticism – at that time there was even talk of the « school murder in the station district ».

Decision on the « Leschte Stëppel »?

City councilor Christa Brömmel (Déi Gréng) took the opportunity to criticize the DP-CSV coalition. Almost half of all school -age children now visits private schools – often far from the residential area of ​​families. The high costs tightened social inequality, said Brömmel. Gabriel Boisante (LSAP) also agrees: « Education cannot be left to a private sector. » Families would register their children in private schools after the daycare center – the public education system could not keep children and convince parents.

Brömmel also skeptically commented on the current decision: it was to be welcomed that the political zigzag course was finally ended – but the way there was questionable. « The whole thing was pushed through on the » Leschte Stëppel « , » she said. « And that is exactly why I can understand the annoyance of the parents well. »

Schöffe Paul Galles will take a position on Monday at the next council meeting on the reactions of the council.
