The salary paid to the ministers last year increased by more than 91,000 euros / day
According to LETA calculations based on the information provided by the State Chancellery, in 2023, ministers were paid in salary EUR 1,628,804 in salary, and in 2024 – EUR 1,720,504, the total amount paid increases by 5.6%.
Last year, the largest salary in the Cabinet of Ministers (Cabinet of Ministers) was received as Minister of Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and Minister of the Interior.
In accordance with the Law on Remuneration of Officials and Employees of State and Local Government Institutions, the monthly salary of the Cabinet of Ministers shall be determined by the basis of the monthly salary and applying the factor. The basic monthly salary calculations, in turn, are based on the increase in average wages in the country and is recalculated once a year.
In 2023, the base wage was 1137 euros, with a coefficient of 6.2 for ministers’ salaries, the nominal monthly salary of ministers in 2023 was 7052 euros before taxes. The Prime Minister’s salary was subject to a coefficient of 7, respectively, the Prime Minister’s nominal monthly salary in 2023 was 7962 euros before taxes.
In 2024, however, the base wage increased to 1206 euros, and with a coefficient of 6.2 ministers’ nominal monthly salary last year was 7,475 euros before taxes. The Prime Minister, on the other hand, applied a coefficient of 7, so the prime minister’s monthly salary was 8440 euros. According to the declarations submitted by politicians, the remuneration actually paid to the ministers was higher, as not only the statutory wages, but also leave, social guarantees and other factors are affected by the remuneration paid.
This year, the nominal monthly salary of ministers has reached EUR 7,670, but next year it is expected to be EUR 8089 before taxes.
The Foreign Minister’s post was in proportion to the highest rise in remuneration last year. In 2023 the position was held by the current President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Krišjānis Kariņš. They have indicated in declarations that they received 59,086 euros and 30,003 euros, respectively, or € 89,089 respectively.
Karin was the Foreign Minister until April 10, 2024, later replaced by Baiba Braže (JV). According to information provided by the State Chancellery, both officials earned a total of € 107,223 as the Foreign Minister last year, which is 20.3% more than in 2023. They received EUR 79,514 and EUR 29,656, respectively, for the minister’s duties, which is EUR 109,172. In the middle of 2024, Login was replaced by Agnese Lace (P). Both Agneses earned EUR 62,390 and 58,100 euros, respectively, € 120,490, or 10.4% more than the salary of the Minister of Culture in 2023, respectively.
The prime minister’s salary increased by 6.8%last year. In this position, Kariņš and Siliņa earned € 118,870 in 2023. Last year, Siliņš worked as a prime minister throughout the year, receiving a total of € 126,943.
Previously, the State Chancellery explained to LETA that the differences in salaries were explained by the fact that ministers were replacing each other during a mission or illness, which is paid accordingly.
Since July 1, 2022, when amendments to the Law on Remuneration of Officials and Employees of State and Local Government Institutions, or « Reform Reform », state and municipal institutions, are gradually increasing the remuneration to bring about 80% of the authors of the authors. According to data from recent years, rewards in the public sector are growing significantly faster than in the private. For example, in the private sector, the average gross wage increased by 8.7%in 2024, reaching € 1,666, while the average gross salary in the public sector increased by 12.2%, reaching 1742 euros.
