The Republican Party has rotted – from Trump and downwards
Former Vice President Mike Pence looked genuinely moved when he received John F Kennedy Library’s major civil courage award on Sunday. As the prize motivation sounded, Pence risked both his career and his life when on January 6, 2021 he refused to give in to Donald Trump’s demand to ignore the election result and a mob then stormed Congress to lynch him.
Yet he stuck to his duty and the oath that he, like all other American officials, sworn to maintain the constitution.
Just a few hours Before the awards ceremony, Trump was interviewed in one of the major TV channels. There, the president was asked if not everyone who is now threatened by deportation has the right to have their case tried in court. « I don’t know, I’m not a lawyer, » the answer was and when the reporter noted that the Constitution states that right objected Trump annoyed that it was perhaps true, but that in that case you would have to have millions of trials.
On a direct question if he did not have to maintain the constitution, Trump replied: « I don’t know. »
On a direct question if he did not have to maintain the constitution, Trump replied again: « I do not know. » That he also put his hand on the Bible and solemnly sworn to do so he must have forgotten.
Even more remarkable is perhaps how many around him who not only suppressed it but also everything they used to stand for. Current Vice President JD Vance, who used to compare him to Hitler and now praises the ground he is walking, has certainly changed its attitude towards the person Donald Trump. Vance has long been pushing for both American constitution and in the new foreign policy where it is more important to be friends with Vladimir Putin than to support his allies.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubios Metamorphosis is more revolving. Rubio has devoted his political career to the struggle for democracy and for the US role in the world, and immediately after the storming of capitol, he condemned the attack as anti -American anarchy. Now he works for the person who was in the mob.
The threat from Russia and the importance of standing up for Ukraine has also been among Rubio’s most important issues. At the famous press conference in the White House when Trump and Vance scolded Volodymyr Zelenskyj you could see him sit quietly and torment next to it. Still, he went out obediently afterwards and explained that Zelenskyj either had to give in to Russia or resign.
Forcing subordinates to say things they know is not true is a ritualized form of humiliation. Rubio’s motive for joining it is probably the hope of taking over after Trump. Too bad that the political movement he was once part of has already rotted.
