The remains of women and children in a mysterious well. Discovery of researchers from Poland

Scientists from the Institute of Archeology of the University of Wrocław have been conducting excavations in the position of El Cura in the final section of the Atico River Valley in the southern Peru since 2022.

In the recently ended excavation season, archaeologists discovered, among others A cemetery with remains of 24 people, mainly women and children, wrapped in tomb and buried with numerous gifts. Bone anthropological analysis confirmed that these people did not died with natural death. This is evidenced by numerous damage to the skulls and chest, which is the direct cause of the death of all individuals.

– We came across a cemetery of people who were killed during the invasion. Each skull found here has significant damage, resulting, either as a result of a blow with a club with a copper head in the form of a star, or a club with a spherical stone head – said the project manager, prof. Józef Szykulski from the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw, Honorary Professor Universidad Católica de Santa María in Arequip.

Researchers think that the murder was made by a group that attacked the camp. However, the invaders probably lost the confrontation, and the members of the community from which they came from fallen, after the victorious fight they buried their loved ones.

A mysterious well, in her 29 bodies

– Such a conclusion is supported by the fact that the dead were buried with honors, they were wrapped in kisses made of wool or cotton and equipped with grave gifts, and then the grave cavities in which the bodies were laid, enclosed with a stone wall – informed prof. Szykulski.

Bone and stone ornaments, textiles and ceramics fragments, which should be associated with Chuquibamba culture (Aruni) were found in the graves. Its epicenter is located in the Majees basin lying south of Atico. The researcher assumes that the described events could have taken place during the period of violent political changes and migration that took place in the period from the 11th century ne

However, this is not the end. During excavations, Polish scientists also discovered a mysterious well, and in it – 29 burials of children and women arranged in several layers.

– There were no traces indicating that these people died violent death. It should be assumed that we are dealing here with the collective grave of individuals belonging to one big family, that is, to one clan, a community that in the same place gradually hid their dead within 40-50 years. The dating C14 of the tomb indicate that it comes from the V-VI century-said prof. Szykulski.

A surprising number of children’s deaths

While conducting research in the Atico Valley, the researchers were surprised by a very large number of children’s burials. It is well known that every second child lived in the pre -Columbian communities. However, in this case the mortality was much greater.

– It cannot be ruled out that the cause of such high mortality in infants and young children was environmental contamination. It should be remembered that in the upper part of the Atico holding there are copper and gold deposits with which there is also a strongly poisonous arsenic. His gear into the groundwater and the Atico River itself could have a serious impact on the health of the community living in this area. The laboratory tests ordered at the end of April in Peru will explain the legitimacy of this hypothesis – explained the researcher.
