LETA has already written that with the death of Soldier Sladzevsky, the third volunteer of Latvia has lost his life since Russia’s large -scale invasion.
Last year, Latvian volunteer soldier Edgar Platonov, born in 1983, fell in Ukraine. The soldier died on December 25 last year, as a result of the war, as a result of his duties in the Ukrainian Armed Forces Legion and selflessly fighting against the Russian occupier’s army in Novojehorivka, Luhansk.
Platonov has not previously served in the National Armed Forces (NAF). The NAF professional service soldiers and national guards who have a contract for the Service in the Armed Forces are not allowed in another country’s armed conflict.
Along with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced the establishment of a special unit – a foreign legion. Thousands of volunteers have expressed their desire to join this unit. There are currently several Latvian citizens on the Ukrainian side.
In the autumn of 2023, another volunteer, former Latvian NAF soldier Vitaly Smirnov, died in a drone attack in eastern Ukraine in the Donecka area.
