The priest’s brutal murder. Psychiatric observation of the accused
According to investigative findings, Szymon K. invaded the presbytery, having a metal top with him. He attacked the priest in the building, dealing with numerous blows around the head and torso. According to the prosecutor’s office, the attacker continued his brutal attack even after the priest fell to the ground.
Screams and noise were worried about the housekeeper, who immediately ran to help the priest. The woman, seeing the dramatic situation, used pepper spray against the attacker, which forced him to stop the attack. Then she escaped to another room and called for help. Unfortunately, despite the rapid intervention of the emergency services, the spiritual life could not be saved.
Attack on a priest. Was he insane?
In January, the prosecutor submitted a request to discontinue criminal proceedings against Szymon K., citing his insanity at the time of committing the act. At the same time, he applied for the application of a security agent to the suspect in the form of placing it in a closed psychiatric institution. However, the District Court in Olsztyn, after reading the existing evidence, decided that the judicial-psychiatric opinion prepared at an earlier stage of the proceedings raises doubts. Therefore, a decision was made to carry out an additional psychiatric opinion.

-The court decided to allow evidence from a new forensic and psychiatric opinion, which will take into account all the circumstances of the case-said judge Adam Barczak. Experts pointed out, however, that to issue a reliable opinion, it is necessary to conduct four-week court-psychiatric observation in the conditions of a psychiatric ward.
The decision to psychiatric observation is of key importance for the further course of the case. If the experts confirm the insanity of Szymon K., the court may decide to discontinue criminal proceedings and apply a security measure in the form of placing it in a closed psychiatric institution. Otherwise, the criminal process will be continued.
