The presidential in 2026: “outside the box”

So far we are sure of two candidacies: Admiral Gouveia and Melo and Dr. Marques Mendes; The uncertainty of Dr. André Ventura and Dr. António José Seguro; and the ambition of many others, but still unknown.

In the usual “Cataloging of Political Space” Admiral Gouveia and Melo, a military, spontaneous, independent, willing, transverse candidacy, that of Dr. Marques Mendes, prepared over the years, in the media, in the right center of the right center, Dr. António José Seguro, in the left center and Dr. André Ventura in the populist radical right.

The legislative elections of the 18th, the 18th, were identifying and clarifying regarding the completion of the referenced space, apparently reducing the number of presidential candidates.

André Ventura will have to give up his candidacy, one may not want to be Prime Minister and simultaneously President of the Republic.

The arrival founded in 2019, during the governance of the socialist of António Costa, seemed at the time to be the result of « geniuses » the « blessing of the gods », an insurance policy in socialist governance. However, in just five years, the largest opposition party status assumes in the Assembly of the Republic, and simultaneously puts the PS in « intensive care. »

André Ventura legitimately cherishes the dream of overcoming the next legislative elections and being a prime minister. The dizzying rise seems to be indictment soon that the dream will come true. The arrival already knows who of the presidential candidates will support and does not seem to be that of Marques Mendes, let alone any candidacy from the left center.

Obviously, due to the results of the legislative elections, the applications have been reduced to three, and so far two have been assumed. António José Seguro has not yet passed the consideration and thankfully. When everything would indicate its availability the PS has been in the Encalls, now it is really seeing her desire.

In the political space of the left center, reduced to one third of the electorate, the PS remains determining. There are mobilizing personalities, but any of them, after legislative elections, seems to be inevitably convicted of electoral failure. And this situation was not indifferent António Costa.

The history of António Costa’s legacy in the PS and their political consequences in the left center still has much to reflect and tell, although it is personally a success. In the electoral result, the eight -year -old socialist governance was not indifferent, a high political cost for the PS, for the democratic regime and for Portuguese democracy. The brutal defeat was not only Pedro Nuno Santos.

The PS needs to leave the “death tunnel” in which it fell and rediscover the path of light. How? Leaving the state of denial in which many dived him.

A deep defeat far beyond expectable, affecting the foundations of a founding party of democracy, even in difficulties we cannot but be optimistic, we must turn them into opportunities. There are evils that come for good.

In the persistence of continuity, stretch part of the elastic party, using circumstantial narratives, however bright as they may be, contributes to the extension of agony and pain, I would say, by denying their own denial, culminating in a state of shock, whose lack of timely treatment, the dying can die, as the death of the PS in France, Italy and Greece. Expect the miracle without miracle, confusing the end with the beginning, it can only be lack of sense and blindness.

The current situation is only comparable to another time, the worst electoral result of the PS, which took Cavaco Silva to two absolute majorities. At that time, António Guterres’ “ant” work, when national secretary of the organization, later secretary general, withdrew the PS from Limbo and led him to great electoral victories.

At the present moment the PS needs more than the country of António José Seguro, the same as after the troika, in the circumstances that many socialists know, with ant work, learned from guterres, managed to rebuild the PS and win municipal and European elections.

If you present the presidential candidacy, without a doubt, like many others, I will support you committedly, but “outside the box” I am convinced that the PS once again needs António José Seguro.

Without sour, let’s be in the humble PS as he has always been.
