The president of the Judiciary says that questioning « concrete judges » is « improper » of a democracy | Spain

The president of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Isabel Perelló, He has transferred his « total support » to the members of the High Court and the rest of the judicial career « suffering from pressures » and « constant disqualifications » by « those who disagree with their decisions. » « The public manifestations that question actions of concrete judges, and even question the legitimacy of judicial institutions, are improper of an advanced democratic state, as they undermine citizens’ confidence, » he warned before underlining « that all public powers, without exception, are obliged to promote confidence in the democratic institutions that the Constitution gave us. »

Perelló has indicated that there are currently « difficult times » and that this is no exception for judges, since these « must resolve the new conflicts » that arise in a context of « permanent tension that seems to have been installed in public life. » The president of the CGPJ has called on Wednesday in Alicante during the inauguration of the XXXIII days of magistrates and dean judges of Spain to all authorities and individuals in order to “recover respect”, and has asked for the “cessation of any pressure or interference in judicial work « .

In his opinion, all judicial resolutions can and must be “subject to debate and criticism, because they help us improve, but there are no personal disqualifications or insults to judges or intolerable pressures, since they undermine the exercise of the function that the Constitution itself entrusts to the Judiciary”.

The president of the CGPJ has stressed that from the Council they are « concerned » about « the attempts to discredit the judges », before which they are « vigilant » to, « to fulfill the constitutional mission of defense of judicial independence. » And has claimed « due institutional respect for judicial decisions, regardless of the political interests of each moment. » Perelló considers that the « systematic disqualification » of justice is a « detriment » for democratic society.
