The possibilities introduced to boys and steel in HR
More than a thousand boys and steel in grade 9 were invited to visit the University of Reykjavik, where they received presentations on what university studies offers.
The project Boys and steel in college is a collaborative project of JBT Marel and Brim with the University for the model of the project Girls, steel and technology that has been held in RU since 2014.
Instead of focusing on technical disciplines, where there are generally more boys, emphasis was placed on showing boys what college education could include, but fewer boys choose to attend college.
Not gone spare of the debate
Sveinn Kjarval, event manager at JBT Marel, who strengthens the event together with Brim, says he has found great interest from students where he introduced the company’s activities to them.
« We have not been spare part of the debate about boys’ problems in the school system and we want to contribute to helping people find their way. This is part of our goals, to increase the visibility of technology and help young people understand what is out there, » says Sveinn.
Interested in college
Andri, Haukur and Thorsteinn in Salaskóli talked to journalists and said the technical presentation they had received earlier in the morning had been interesting.
« They showed us all kinds of final projects and videos about what the students did in RU, » they said, adding that it « could quite happen » that they move into RU.
Practical exercises mixed with information
There was much to be had in the university and various stations where the kids could get rid of themselves, for example, in constructing water pipe sculptures and measuring how fast their fellow students could run.
In sports science, the kids were invited to compete with teachers in equality hops and grants, and they met the scientific measurement methods of sports science along the way.
« We try to show them what possibilities can sprung from their studies and what this can be fun – for example, one with us who has performed a performance analysis in the English ball, » say instructors in sports science.
Lectures and entrepreneurship trips
Students also attended lectures, for example in law. « It is fun to see if we can turn on some interests with someone, and they are remarkably interested in promoting law, » says Andri Fannar Bergþórsson, professor at RU, laughing. He says the development is that fewer and fewer boys apply for law.
David Örn, Managing Director and other founders of Smitten, introduced the company’s entrepreneurial road and said it was important to provide boys with special inspiration to go to college. « It is important to go to college, both for critical thinking and simply learning to learn. We also want to show them that it is okay to make mistakes, » he adds.
Sigurður Svansson and Hallur Jónasson at Sahara presented the company’s operations to students and made their way and lessons through the education system and the labor market. « We are trying to encourage the young kids, the young boys, to see the opportunities in what’s ahead. »
Technology and innovation
The kids got to look at technological innovations in various sectors, such as silky -soft basalt threads that have massive load -bearing capacity and drone technology.
Guðmundur Kristjánsson at the Faculty of Technology, HR, showed students a variety of robots who had been constructed at the university and described them for the study where there is much to be said that students learn each other.
« It is very fun to show them what we are doing in the technical department and what is going on in this world today, » says Guðmundur, who welcomes the fact that a presentation for boys in addition to girls and steel is being presented.
« We see that more diversity in the program leads to a better and broad -minded learning environment – there will be more collaboration, » he adds.
