The father is found guilty of a total of eight criminal offenses.

According to the criminal case, he violently resident with the girl for several years – he was angry with his hair and pulled on the floor, beating with fists and feet, strap and belt metal on the girl’s head and body. In addition, he screamed at him, lame uncensored words, periodically took off the cell phone and checked its contents, and went to her room without knocking, limiting her personal freedom. The accused also threatened to kill him if the girl did not act according to his father’s request.

The accused, along with his daughter for security reasons, came to Latvia from Chechnya in 2019 to gain political refugee status.

A Russian citizen explained at the hearing that the controlling behavior of the daughters was related to the fear of her safety, and drew attention to the cultural differences in his opinion – no one had explained to him before custody that the child’s beating was criminalized for upbringing.

As a result of the violence used, the victim was caused by physical and psychiatric suffering, creating a constant sense of insecurity and fear of the father. The criminal offenses result in a risk that a girl may develop chronic mental disorders in the future, which has a lasting consequence of the child’s further development, the prosecutor’s office points out.

The father was terminated by the right of parental custody. In the spring of 2024, the girl crossed the state border and is now staying in Russia with her mother. The prosecutor’s office states that the mother had repeatedly tried to obtain custody and to restore contact with the child whose father had taken out of the country without the mother’s consent.
