The Ombudsman will decide on further action after checkout from the hospital / day
He pointed out that in the hospital because of cardiological and neurological problems associated with high blood pressure and arrhythmia, it has been on Thursday. However, on Wednesday, May 21, he had a sick leave and it was clear that, due to health problems, he would not be able to attend the Saeima on Thursday, which Janson’s deputy sent a letter to Parliament’s Bureau.
Janson admitted that this was not the first time he was not coming to the report – the previous time was in 2023. However, he did not comment on whether it had any connection to the excessive alcohol consumption of other people. « I won’t comment on this, it would be a stupid speculation to say something about it, » the Ombudsman said.
However, he did not deny that he had consumed alcohol in his life, possibly too much, and « it leaves some consistency ». At the same time, he stressed that there were no situations in which he would have trembled his hands or had any other physical manifestations.
Janson pointed out that he introduced « aggressive communication to society, politicians, especially civil servants, when he starts working as an Ombudsman. The office was not recognizable at the time, and its documents were often ignored, so Jansons has tried to keep the office respected with such aggressive communication. During this time, a separate communication department was established in the office.
This is Janson’s third term as an Ombudsman, and, as he says, on the commissions of the Saeima, discussing issues that the Ombudsman’s Office has focused on, to go to colleagues who know the topics. « I can’t be everywhere at the same time, and I can’t know everything at the same time, » Janson emphasized.
He also says that since the first day he started working in the office, the heads of the departments have had a very large authority, and that no application on the Ombudsman’s own desk. « They come through records in the chapters where it should work with it, » the Ombudsman said. Jansons points out that he must sign other forms.
In the public space, on the other hand, he has not been seen lately, as many of the measures are associated with higher or less alcohol consumption. However, Janson is understood that he has not refused to drink himself.
Asked whether he plans to resign himself as the Ombudsman, Janson admitted that he had not made the decision. « I wouldn’t want to rush out with any decisions. There are colleagues who say they need to resign, but there are those who say – by no means, » says Janson. He returns to this issue when he is discharged from the hospital. When this could happen, he couldn’t say.
Janson also regretted the actions of politicians, commenting on Janson’s absence, expressing that most of them should not be in politics at all. « They actually sold the sleeping side, » he said.
It has already been reported that the hearing of Ombudsman Juris Jansons was transferred at the Saeima sitting on Thursday, as Janson was ill. As the Saeima Speaker said at the Saeima, representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office have informed the Saeima that it is currently unknown how long the Ombudsman would be ill. The report is expected to be considered at one of the nearest Saeima sessions.
Latvian Television reported that Janson’s non -appearance for the Saeima has caused many deputies to be deeply disappointed, as this was not the first time he did not come. Several factions believe that this is disrespect, as the Ombudsman is a responsible official whose task is to inform the Saeima on issues of human rights and good governance.
Some parliamentarians pointed out that there should be some way out, and perhaps even the release of the Ombudsman, although such a procedure is relatively difficult. Labor legislation prevents the dismissal of a person who is inability to work.
Saeima deputy Jan Simanovsky (P) LTV admitted that she was concerned about the issue, and in Janson’s work she sees « critical features » and « if one does not come, we cannot discuss it ». She said it could not continue – action was needed from politicians.
The Saeima awaits explanations on the situation in the Ombudsman’s Office and Janson’s regular absence.
Janson’s term of office as the Ombudsman ends in March next year.
