The United States is the world’s largest oil producer, but Donald Trump wants more. He demands the total « energy hominance » of his country – and brings the plan to falter.
It was a great promise that American President Donald Trump gave his followers on the day of his swearing in the Capitol. « We will be a rich nation again and it is the liquid gold under our feet that will help us, » he said. With the « Drill, Baby, Drill » battle cry, the Republican had already made a mood in many oil-rich US states in many oil-rich US states and stoked hope for the oil companies that under his leadership the annoying energy transition to renewable energy sources would find an abrupt end.
And hardly chosen, Trump promptly delivered. In the first few days of his presidency, he called out the « national energy emergency », loosened the environmental requirements for oil and gas bores in the United States and ended the moratorium of his predecessor Joe Biden for the construction of new export termals for liquid gas (LNG). The United States should get a lot more oil and gas out of the earth and thus reduce the energy prices in the country, according to the idea. At the same time, the Republican started an aggressive advertising tour for fossil fuels « Made in USA » and urged Europe to buy even more American liquid gas.
The US oil companies clapped applause and praised, reinforced to return to the domestic boreholes. Nevertheless, the plan could still fail from the United States’ “energy dominance”, and – standing today – Donald Trump himself was to blame.
