Romania has learned the necessary lessons and the state institutions are committed to ensure the correct and transparent election, in full agreement with the democratic standards, said interim president Ilie Bolojan, on Tuesday, at the meeting with eight members of the US Congress in Cotroceni.

« The interim president of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, received on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the Cotroceni Palace, a delegation of the Congress of the United States, on official visit to Romania.

During the meeting, the main areas of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States were addressed, with an emphasis on the security component, economic cooperation and developmental prospects of the bilateral relationship.

President Ilie Bolojan reaffirmed the firm commitment of Romania to the strategic partnership with the United States, stressing that it is a key element of foreign policy and national security architecture.

The president highlighted the importance of strengthening the American presence in Romania, especially in the context of current security challenges in the Black Sea region. He stressed that Romania actively contributes to NATO’s eastern flank security, and close cooperation is essential for effective discouragement.

Another priority topic of discussions constituted the evolution of the process of including Romania in the Visa Waiver program. Ilie Bolojan said that this objective represents a priority of the bilateral agenda and a expectation of Romanian citizens. Romania expresses its entire availability to collaborate with the American authorities to complete this process within a reasonable time and with a positive result.

Also, the common interest in developing the economic dimension of the strategic partnership was emphasized, by attracting American investments and extending commercial cooperation. In the current context of the Romanian economy, there is a significant potential for deepening the bilateral economic relations.

Regarding the electoral process of 2024, the interim president said that Romania has learned the necessary lessons and that the state institutions are committed to ensure the correct and transparent election, in full agreement with the democratic standards.

At the same time, topics of regional interest were addressed. Interim President Ilie Bolojan spoke about the importance of strengthening security on NATO’s eastern flank, as an essential element for maintaining stability in the region. In this context, he discussed the support offered to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and the firm support of the European Republic of Moldova. Romania remains a responsible partner within the Euro -Atlantic community, employed in defending democratic values ​​and promoting stability and security in the region.
