The official decision is expected in September
The Vjosa River, known as the latest wild river in Europe, is expected to be included in the UNESCO -protected heritage list as part of the international program « Man and Biosphere ». The news was announced during a meeting held in Nice between the Minister of Tourism and the Environment, Mirela Kumbaro and the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, a continuous supporter of Albania and her efforts to protect cultural and natural resources.
« Audrey Azoulay, a precious friend of Albania with whom we have had excellent cooperation in the field of culture. We are now marrying another common achievement: the inclusion of Vjosa in the UNESCO heritage as a symbol of harmony between nature and man, » said Minister Kumbaro.
Kumbaro added that the official decision to include Vjosa is expected in September, which will make this natural natural area part of the prestigious world heritage list. This will be an important step not only for Albania, but for the whole region, reinforcing the status of Vjosa National Park as the first of its kind in Europe.
The Vjosa River is known as the « last wild river in Europe », as it flows freely for about 270 km, from sources in the Pind Mountains in Greece (where it is called Aoos) to the Adriatic Sea in Albania. including endangered species such as screws, Dalmatian pelicans and endemic fish, is a migration corridor for many birds and an important area for European biodiversity.
