The number of creative sector organizations is growing

The number of organizations in the creative sector of the Russian economy in 2024 increased for the second year in a row, experts of the Institute of Statistical Research and Knowledge Economics (Hesies) of the Higher School of Economics in a review based on the SPARK-Interfax database noted. In 2023 there were 188 thousand (plus 2.8% by 2022), in 2024-already 194 thousand (an increase of 3.1%).

Let us explain that the creative sector includes 17 industries: “Music”, “Performing arts”, “Cinema and TV shows”, “Animation”, “Video games”, “Software”, “Media and media”, “Book business”, “Advertising and PR”, “Art Industry”, “Folk art crafts and crafts”, “Cultural heritage”, rest and entertainment, ” “Design”, “Architecture and Urbanics”, “Fashion”, “Jewelry”, “Gastronomy”.

The main reason for growth is a stable decrease in the number of liquidated legal entities in this area with the stable dynamics of the creation of organizations. Over the past five years, the number of liquidations annually decreased by an average of 20% (in 2024 there were 13.6 thousand of them). Registration of companies annually grew from 2020 to 2023, but experienced a decline in 2024 (reduction by 7%, to 15.9 thousand).

The TOP-5 industries in the increase in the number of organizations in 2024 included a sphere of software (plus 2.7 thousand), gastronomy (380), art industry, cinema and series (180) and design (170). The most noticeable decline was shown by advertising and PR (minus 830 companies), a book business (300), media and media (200), cultural heritage, rest and entertainment (200) and jewelry (40).

HSE experts divided the named industries into four groups. First: areas with the highest coefficients of creating organizations and low – liquidation. This is animation, video games, software and gastronomy. In the second group – companies with high coefficients of both creation and liquidation. These are businesses with low barriers to the market entrance and with high competition-design, music and art industry.

Low coefficients of creation and liquidation are characteristic of the spheres of the third group – with long production cycles, significant state participation and high entrance barriers. This is a book business, architecture and urbanism, cinema and series, performing arts and cultural heritage, rest, entertainment. The position of industries from the fourth group is considered the most risky – with a low coefficient of creating organizations and high – their liquidation: fashion, jewelry, media and media, advertising and PR, folk art crafts and crafts. Experts note that, perhaps, the reduction in the number of companies here is due to changes in the economy (the departure of foreign companies and import substitution problems).
