The Norwegian multifunctional vessel arrives to repair the sea cable between Finland and Estonia

Norwegian multifunctional ship Cygnus repairs the damaged Estlink 2 electric transfer cable on Christmas Day.
Kimmo Nepola, Head of Fingrid Unit, says that the repair contract will be completed in mid -July.
The total cost of the repair is between EUR 50 and EUR 60 million, which are applied for by the damage to the suspect.
Christmas Day The damaged Estlink 2 electric transfer cable is repaired by the Norwegian multifunctional ship Cygnus. The platform is currently being prepared for the contract south of Oslo and is expected in the Gulf of Finland in a couple of weeks.
It should be ready in mid -July.
“The turn desk, tensile equipment and other necessary equipment is currently being installed on the ship in Norway,” says the unit manager Kimmo Nepola From Fingrid.
Repair contract The preliminary work in the Gulf of Finland has been done earlier in the spring: the cable has been cut off on both sides of the damage, a broken one -kilometer long piece of the sea and intact ends plugged to wait for the final repair.
In the actual repair, one of the intact ends is lifted on the deck of Deep Cygnus. There it is connected to the ship’s replacement cable.
The joint is lowered by the sea, and then the cable is continued until the other intact head is reached. Then it is also lifted from the sea and a new connection is made.
The cable is then intact all the way. The corrected point is lowered back into the sea, after which the contract is complete and the electricity runs again between Finland and Estonia.
Estlink 2 -The cable runs from Anttila in Porvoo to Püss in Eastern Virumaa. The total length of the cable is approximately 170 kilometers, of which 14 kilometers are in Finland and 12 kilometers of underground cable in Estonia. The rest of about 145 kilometers runs to the bottom of the Gulf of Finland. The cable has a diameter of 15 cents and a weight of 80 kg per meter.
The repair piece is one kilometer long and 80,000 kilos.
The repair ship Deep Cygnus is not quite small either.
It is 122 meters long and 22 meters wide. The ship’s load capacity is 7,900 tonnes.
According to Kimmo Nepola, Fingrid, the total cost of the repair contract is EUR 50-60 million. They try to pay the cause of the damage.
