The new Pope wants « a just peace » – Diepresse.com
During his inauguration, Pope Leo XIV addressed the martyrdom of the Ukrainians and the hunger in Gaza. In addition to US Vice President J. D. Vance, Chancellor Stocker was also in Rome. This invited the Pope to Austria.
The Pope contested the preliminary program. When the guests of honor began to take a seat in Rome on this sunny Sunday morning in front of St. Peter’sdom and the Ave Maria was prayed via the speaker, Leo XIV suddenly appeared with the papamobil in the crowd on St. Peter’s Square. He drove several rounds and waved the enthusiastic believer. Around 200,000 had come into the Vatican, crowds of crowds on and around St. Peter’s Square.
The spiritual guests of honor were on the left in front of the cathedral, the political on the right. These include US Vice President J. D. Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, Germany’s Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, Spain’s King Felipe, the Ukrainian President, Wolodymyr Selenskij-and Austria’s Federal Chancellor, Christian Stocker. The inauguration of the new Pope lasted two hours. The fair was mainly held in Italian and Latin, but there were also elements in Spanish and English. When Leo XIV received the « fishing ring », there was applause. Likewise, when he spoke to the martyrdom of Ukraine in his sermon and campaigned for a « fair and permanent peace ». And also when he addressed the suffering of the children and hunger in Gaza. He also went into dying in Burma.
Relation to Francis
In his sermon, Pope Leo XIV repeatedly referred to his predecessor Francis. He was chosen « without earnings » to Francis’ successor, he said. « I come to you with fear and tremble as a brother who wants to be a servant of your faith and your joy, who goes with you on the way of the love of God who wants to see us all in a family. »
What is important to him is a united church that is committed to world peace, said the Pope. And, like its predecessor, became critical of capitalism: « In our time we still experience too much discord, too many wounds that are caused by hate, violence, prejudices, fear of the other and by an economic model that exploits the resources of the earth and the poorest urges to the brink. »

The position of the Pope, on the other hand, is characterized by sacrificing love. « It is never about taking others through compulsion to take religious propaganda or power, but always and exclusively about loving as Jesus did, » preached Leo XIV.
Stocker invited Pope
« You don’t experience such days often in your life, » said Chancellor Christian Stocker afterwards at a reception in the Austrian embassy in Rome. It was an event « in which the world meets ». Like the other heads of state and government, he also had the opportunity to speak briefly to the new Pope. He also invited him to Austria. « Many hopes and expectations are associated with the new Pope, » said the Chancellor. And the Pope’s voice for peace and tolerance is more necessary than ever.
ÖVP boss Stocker had already traveled the evening before. He no longer got the Austrian song contest victory: after a dinner on the Piazza Farnese, he went to bed before voting. Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS), National Council President Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ) and Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) had also traveled to the inauguration of the Pope from Austria. The Archbishop Franz Lackner was also in Rome.
On Sunday afternoon Pope Leo XIV hit Wolodymyr Selenskij in the small circle. And on Monday, Leo XIV wants to sit down with his American compatriot J. D. Vance. The American Vice President and the Ukrainian President went separate paths after the pope was inaugurated. A meeting was not planned. Vance was picked up by a convoy. Selenskij walked a little along the walls of the Vatican with his wife.
