The new design of Boertoren: less large break, but with spectacular glass crown and 6 meters higher (Antwerp)

Fernand Huts presented his new plans for the expansion and renovation of the Boerentoren on Wednesday. The new design clashes less with the old part of the tower, but the new glass dome on the top will be a new eye -catcher. If there are no more obstacles, Huts hopes that the renovation will be around in 2028.

After several services had responded to the first concept, entrepreneur Fernand Huts and architect Daniel Libeskind have a new design ready for the Boerentoren in the heart of Antwerp. They suggested this on Wednesday morning, in the skyscraper itself, which is currently in the pipeline. « A consensus has been found, » Huts is strong, hoping that the renovation project can now start quickly.

« Higher was not allowed »

The ‘new’ farmer’s tower must be 103 meters high, slightly higher than now (97 meters). « We wanted even higher, but that wasn’t allowed, » laughs Huts. On those upper floors, a glass construction appears in the plans that has to ensure a beautiful panorama of the city and « to Brussels, Ghent and perhaps even Limburg ». Nothing would change on the outside of the lower parts of the tower.

Another striking element is a green « sculpture garden » on the outbuilding on the twelfth floor where Huts wants to place « top artworks ». There will also be a new glass construction at the tip of the outbuilding. It makes way for a new restaurant.

Ready in 2028?

Huts, in his own words, is now ready to submit a permit application, and hopes that there will be no more kink in the cable. If it is possible to get the necessary permits this year, the Boerentoren 2.0 can therefore be ready in 2028. Also with « De Buurman » – real estate entrepreneur Eric de Vocht from the Hilton hotel who appealed against the demolition permit for the crown of the former KBC tower – the sloping conflict would have been cleared.
