The NATO Summit in The Hague can be catastrophic for us, much worse than Bucharest 2008
Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council of the European Union, took the initiative to meet the Presidents of Macedonia and Bulgaria, who were due to attend the NATO Summit in The Hague on June 24 and 25 this year. The goal is to overcome the problem between the two countries due to Macedonia’s blockade in the EU, by Bulgaria.
Macedonia immediately accepted the proposal. Bulgaria, meanwhile, is open and announced that their delegation will not lead the president but the prime minister. It is likely that this change is tailor -made in order to avoid meeting our president. Our side also accepted the meeting with the Prime Minister. Answer – none.
The question is logical – why Sofia avoids the meeting. It is certainly not a coincidence, just like the change in the level of their delegation. There is not enough information about all these events, but there are assumptions that look quite real. First and crucial it is that the meeting is certainly not conceived just as a general or principled conversation or some exchange of opinion, as Siljanovska-Davkova announces (« I’m ready to talk, our national views are known », « Vecer », 14.6.2025).
It can be argued that the meeting, which is initiated by Costa and should also be von der Leyen, Kaya Calas… So the top of the EU, and it is rumored to be NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, is intended as a top mediation. If so, and it is unlikely to be different, there should be no doubt that the initiative is hidden a precise proposal (dictation?) To overcome the problem between the two countries. If this is not the case, all these individuals – would lose precious time.
When put on the table everything that has been happening between Macedonia and Bulgaria in recent years, the most reliable is the possibility for Brussels to propose a change of our constitution – with delayed validity! In other words, to accept our proposal and put us before the final act, which will inevitably lead to our disaster. Their intention is certainly positive because they accept something we have suggested, but that does not diminish our consequences! That is because, as a whole, for us the biggest problem is currently not the change of the Constitution itself, although it should never be realized, but the negotiating framework, with which Macedonia will never enter the Union. With such a possible proposal by the Union, the framework remains, and that is over our European perspective.
In Brussels, of course, Bulgarian hallucinations have been known to Macedonia, who, at least so far, did not want, and they could not affect. At the same time, it is clear to them that our proposal for delayed action of constitutional problems is something that cannot be rejected. It gives them an exceptional opportunity to show some goodwill to us, without harm to Bulgaria, if it has no hidden intentions as yet – there are. For our misfortune, this move to Brussels, if it is true, in this particular case is counterproductive to us, as the aforementioned proposal was our isolated move.
And if such a breakthrough from Brussels, it remains meaningless that, under foreign dictation, we were asked to change the constitution as a condition for the start of any negotiations that could never end up (Turkey). In the best, ideal conditions, our admission to the Union can be 15, 20 … If that happens, which is very likely, and the change of the Constitution, either with delayed action, means that a major concession will be given, and in return we will not get anything.
In Sofia, they probably know exactly what Brussels’ intentions are, and only that can be the occasion for their behavior and not accepting the meeting. It is difficult to believe that ours know what (us) to Brussels. For our great happiness, Sofia has built a maximum firm position in relation to Macedonia; Based on (quasi -) « scientific » basis of BAN; accepted in the government; with the voted declaration in the Assembly; And, through the « explanatory » memorandum, delivered to the whole world. That is why they find it difficult to change their precisely drawn (though crazy) attitude towards Macedonia, which in this case can be of great benefit to us. God forbid to survive in their position!
Sofia is for the first time under serious pressure from Brussels. It is difficult to imagine that they will be ready for such a « compromise », aware that Macedonia can join the EU after many years, or – never! And everything around the « Bulgarians » in the Constitution would be for them – for nothing. It will be difficult for them to explain these doubts in Brussels, and, on the other hand, if they do not accept a meeting, it will be a big blow to their rating. They will show uncooperability.
Output can be if Sofia shows a Balkan cunning and, at the last minute, Zeljaskov « ill » and replaced by the Minister of Defense! In that case, the meeting will be pointless. If the above assumptions are confirmed, only Sofia will save the cheek.
If, however, Bulgaria accepts the delayed importance of changing our constitution, it will put us in an extremely unpleasant, more precise position, though they will not achieve their key goal, to become « state -building ». Our proposal will be accepted and we will have to continue after the dictates of Sofia and Brussels (the negotiating framework), which will not take us anywhere. We will be left without any maneuvering space for any alternative and radical moves. The cancellation of the second protocol will be impossible, which will only begin the process of clearing relations with Bulgaria; to put them on real reciprocal bases; and building equal bilateral relations. So we would have defended Macedonianism and we would find ourselves on the right and clear way to Brussels. This is…
Our proposal to delay the importance of constitutional changes was a great move at the beginning, as we made it clear that the treacherous policies of the previous government could not pass. That, however, as an isolated move, had a temporary role and had to follow a second phase, with a directly designed breakthrough of Bulgarian aggression. The negotiating framework also had to be challenged, from which we, extremely unnecessary, and for unknown reasons – we abstained. The development of the situation should be carefully monitored to assess whether there are still conditions for cancellation of the second protocol. This is a warning that move to take as soon as possible. So the easiest and most painless we will get out of the deadlock.
In The Hague, in the event of a possible co -operation on the Bulgarian side, which is not expected, we will not have the option of withdrawing from our own proposal. Therefore, we should insist on adapting to the extremely unacceptable negotiating framework with representatives of the EU and Bulgaria on the spot, demanding that a certain procedure be specified immediately. Changing the Constitution, and with delayed action, is our huge concession and it must be valorized. It must be emphasized that the framework reflects the maximalist Bulgarian fantasy and that it is unacceptable for us because, with it, Macedonia will never become a member. Changing the Constitution, and with delayed importance, must be conditioned by adjusting the framework.
Finally, let’s repeat again. The introduction of the « Macedonian Bulgarians » into our Constitution, and as a « state -building people », would mean a definitive end to the Macedonian character of this state. For Sofia, we are all « Macedonian Bulgarians » and nothing else and, over time, Bulgaria will be an inevitable process. They openly play on the map of the signatures of over 120,000 Macedonians that they are Bulgarians (along with their families, they are almost 500,000). A new and more frightening framework agreement from the Ohrid will be inevitable, and everything else that logically follows.
We must be aware that, at the end of the negotiations with the Union, if that ever happens, our membership will have to ratify the Bulgarian Assembly. What do you think, if we do not accept that we are « Bulgarians by gender », and as such we were until 1945; that our language is a Bulgarian dialect; That we have a common history, meaning Bulgarian… Is it possible for their congregation to ratify our membership? Such a thing is not and will not be possible.
Even after 50 years!
