The Narva Gazeta asked those standing to the Narva border post, why did they not choose another way in the Russian Federation?
Due to the failure in the electronic system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on Tuesday morning, June 10, for 2.5 hours, control stopped at all Estonian border points, including the Narva section of the border with the Russian Federation. A giant queue formed on Petrovskaya Square, which no one was waiting for that day.
The Narva Gazeta talked with the standing in it about why they chose Narva to cross the border with Russia.
A large technical failure led to a stop of the border post for 2.5 hours
Last Monday, there were extremely few people to the Narva border post from the Estonian side, which, due to the rain that lasted all day, is not surprising, but at the beginning of the week the line on Petrovskaya is almost always relatively small. Tuesdays are usually also distinguished by the minimum interest of traveling to the border crossing, which practically guarantees crossing the border for less time than on Thursday or Friday. But on this Tuesday, June 10, everything went wrong.
Almost at the start of the work of the Narva border post, which opens at 7.00, there was a large technical failure in the IT systems of the institutions of the Ministry of the Interior, among other things led to a stop of border control at all Estonian checks. Around 9.50, the authorities said that the problem was resolved, but in 2.5 hours the turn of people rushing in the Russian Federation on Petrovskaya increased, of course, pretty much, going beyond the level of Narva’s toponym, and the waiting time for the latest in it exceeded 6 hours. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 300 people accumulated as a result of the system failure in line.
“The main thing is that the border in Narva is generally open, I really hope that this will remain.
Around 12.30, your correspondent asked the young couple who left the Narva border post in the direction of the Ivangorod, how much they stood, and the woman replied that they took the turn at 6 in the morning, that is, it turned out 6.5 hours. A lot, but far from the limit, of course. Recently, it happened when the expectation of control exceeded 15 hours. And in the midst of summer, you can expect new records. Last summer, the most unsuccessful crossed the border for the day, but in the fall of 2024 they introduced total customs control, which greatly slowed down the movement of the queue, that is, this vacation season everything can be much worse than a year ago.
On Tuesday, your correspondent talked with people standing in the Narva queue and arriving in our city because of its limits, as a rule, from abroad, asking why they decided to go through Narva. Still, in the same social networks, the opinion is constantly sounding that the travelers suffering in the Narva queue themselves choose such a way. They say, they say, if they were more prudent, they would go through the southern Estonian border posts or flew to Moscow from various European countries with a transplant in Turkey.
« Hard, but nothing terrible »
Anna, an elderly woman who was traveling from Sweden to St. Petersburg at the very end of the line after an hour of the day, said NG to the children that this is not the first time she got the same route.
“I specially arrived in Narva on Tuesday, because I know that at the beginning of the week there are not so many people. Of course, I know what is happening with the Narva burst. I follow the social networks, and on the Web cameras on Petrovskaya. Standing 6 hours is hard, but it’s okay. The weather is normal, not hot, there is no rain. The main thing is that the border here is generally open, I really hope that this will remain, ”said the lady.
According to her, the path through Turkey seems even more complicated to her, and she heard a lot of contradictory and does not want to take risks about the situation at the southern border guards.
« Through Narva – safer »
The journalist Sergei, who has been there from Moscow, who has been living there in Bulgaria, told NG that he was going to the Russian capital through Narva, as he considers this route safer, more reliable than flying through Turkey.
“With planting aircraft in Moscow, problems from there now regularly arise problems due to the threat of drones. Where is the guarantee that they do not attack the plane? But the main thing is that because of them, departures are transferred, landings are performed in other places. I do not need such that the plane on which I fly to Moscow did not sit there, but generally unknown where, ”Sergei argues.
He also does not trust Russian aircraft, with full maintenance of which there are problems due to sanctions.
“You cannot be confident in their good technical condition,” Sergey believes.
Maria from Finland, which Peter came to Estonia from St. Petersburg, told our publication that she and Peter had a negative experience in crossing the border in Luhamaa during the New Year holidays, when the confusion of incomprehensible delays reigned there. She considers the path through Narva more predictable.
“Last August, they stood in Narva for 6.5 hours – a lot, but not fatal. This time, of course, they expected a smaller queue, but it’s okay, ”says Maria.
« Through Narva – cheaper »
Marina from Germany, who was traveling through Narva to Russian relatives, told NG that she considered the option of traveling through Turkey, but she was stopped by the price.
“When I was planning a trip, tickets there and back to Moscow, with a transfer in Turkey, cost about 1000 euros on the plane, which is too expensive for me. I decided to fly through Tallinn. Recently, for the sake of interest, I looked again to see the cost of the flight through Turkey again, and it reduced to 250 euros in both ends, but I had already purchased tickets, it was too late to choose, ”Natalya said.
Other travelers also said NG that it is not so simple to buy a bus ticket to St. Petersburg through the south of Estonia, and also expressed the opinion that with those border guns can be expected, it can be empty, it is very crowded, and it is difficult to find laws.
