In one of his last things, Sherlock Holmes made the following criticism at Dr. Watson: « Your fatal habit of considering everything from the angle of a story rather than a scientific exercise ruined what could have been a series of instructive demonstrations. ” It is in a few words the reproach that the judges of the Paris Criminal Court made to Marine Le Pen and his co -accused in their deliberation of 152 -page river published at the end of a procedure which lasted nearly a decade. This reproach is expressed in a paragraph which has bizarrely passed under the radar of commentators. What does he say? “In defiance of the facts, (the) declarations (of the defendants) are a conception at the very least narrative of the truth. Thus, within the framework of this defense system which tends to challenge the material competence of the court as much as the facts, in a narrative conception of the truth, the risk of recurrence is objectively characterized. ” This criticism is unusual in a judgment, moreover it surprises at a time which made the « narrative » a notion of a catch-all capacity capable of replacing in the media for the description of the facts and their overlap, for the scientific examination of the evidence, in short to the establishment of the truth.
