The name « extremist » targeting AFD provisionally lifted – Liberation

This suspension will be worth until the Cologne administrative court decides on the summary proceedings by AFDwho disputes the decision of the internal intelligence services (BFV), the court said in a statement. The date of this decision is not known.

Practical consequences, the BFV will withdraw from its site the press release of May 2 concerning this classification. As for the increased police monitoring of the party, allowed by this evaluation, it cannot be implemented at this stage.

The announcement last Friday of this new categorization of the party, which came in second position in the legislative elections, had the effect of a bomb, a few days before the inauguration of the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The decision also provoked strong political tensions, especially in relations with the Trump administration, which has taken up the cause for AFD.

For their evaluation, the intelligence services were based on an internal report of more than 1,000 pages carried out over several years. He concluded in particular that the ideology of AFD « Devaluates whole groups of the population in Germany and undermines their human dignity »which is not « Not compatible with the fundamental democratic order ».

This reassessment also relaunched the debate on a possible party ban process created in 2013. The same Court of Cologne, where the BFV sits, had already validated in 2022 the initial decision of this office to classify the AFD party as a case suspected of extremism.
