The ministry presents its own law to Karelian language
Language|The Ministry of Education and Culture proposes, among other things, the Karelian Language Act, the creation of the Karelian People’s Parliament and the editorial of YLE in Karelia.
Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM) has published a Karelian language recovery program to strengthen the position of the endangered native language.
Program It presents 23 measures to revive the Karelian language and improve its vitality. Proposals also include legislative changes.
One of the means presented by the program is the establishment of so -called Karelian People’s Parliament. The new public institution would be responsible for the development of the Karelian language.
The program also proposes to regulate the Karelian Language Act. It would guarantee the constitutional rights of the Karelian speakers to maintain its own language and culture.
Many of the measures presented by the program are related to increasing Karelian language teaching and visibility.
The program proposes, among other things, that the Karelian -language delivery be established for Yle. OKM is also presented in supporting the writing of Karelian study material.
Karelia is a close relative of Finland with a long history in Finland. According to the latest estimates, about 20,000 people are understood by Karelia in Finland, about 11,000 of which speak the language well.
The language has been diligently revived in recent decades. For example, universities’ Karelian courses have been popular with students.
The resuscitation program has been prepared by the Karelian Language Expert Working Group appointed by OKM in cooperation with the Finnish Language Center and the University of Eastern Finland.
The program will be featured on Thursday at the Joensuu campus of the University of Eastern Finland.
