The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) reminds the Romanian citizens, in the context of the latest evolutions of the security situation in Libya, that for this country is a maximum travel alert – ‘Leave the country immediately!’.

The security situation in Libya has undergone a deteriorated in the last period, by multiplying the armed confrontations between major rival groups. These events have the potential to expand to other areas outside the capital of Libya, without a prior warning.

The recent modification of the security climate in the capital Tripoli can cause certain armed formations to resort to abductions or other criminal activities to target foreign citizens present throughout Libya.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it is not unusual for local authorities to decide the partial or total cessation of flights to Mitiga International Airport, eventually resorting to flights to the International Misurated Airport.

The southern region of Libya, as well as the frontal areas with Algeria, Niger, Ciad and Sudan present high security risks due to the presence of organized crime groups and the reduced action capacity of public order institutions, the abduction risks being high.

The Romanian citizens who are already on the territory of Libya are advised to address the Romanian Embassy at Tripoli temporarily relocated to Tunis (18, Avenue d’Aphrique, El Menzah V, BP57-1004-Tunis, emergency phone: 00216 566 146 77, e-mail: [email protected] Announce the presence in the region, communicating their own coordinates in order to be contacted in emergencies.

Romanian citizens who ignore the MAE warnings and move to risk areas are warned to do it on their own responsibility and will bear the consequences of such travelers, given that the intervention possibilities of diplomatic missions and consular offices in such areas are reduced.
