The military will climb the Caraiman Peak

Gesture to applaud. A group of military and civilians will climb, on Wednesday, to the Cross of Heroes on Caraiman peak from the Bucegi Mountains, to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers during the First World War. It is the sixth year in which the military of the « Cireșoaia » Mountain Hunters Battalion in Sfântu Gheorghe organizes this event, to pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed for the unity and sovereignty of Romania.

Lt. col. Liviu Gaiță said, for Agerpres, that, according to tradition, the tricolor flag that will accompany the military on the Caraiman Peak will be flown on June 26, on the National Flag Day, on the mast near the Romanian Host of Sfântu Gheorghe, where the official ceremonies will take place.

The Caraiman cross was erected between 1926 and 1928, by the care and support of Queen Mary and King Ferdinand I of Romania and was inaugurated and consecrated on September 14, 1928, by the feast of the Ascension of the Holy Cross.
In 2013, the Cross of the Heroes of the People entered the Book of Records, as the highest cross in the world located on a mountain peak.

The group will start on Wednesday, at 07:00, in front of the 22 « Cireșoaia » Mountain Hunters Battalion headquarters in Sfântu Gheorghe and will follow the Chichiș – Hărman – Brașov – Predeal – Azuga – Busteni route, to the Dichiu Cabana and the National Sports Complex Piatra Arsă. Participants who come from other locations must reach Piatra Arsă until 08:45. The ascension will start at 09:00 and will be made on the route of the National Sports Complex Piatra Arsa – Babele cabin – Crucea Eroilor – Brâna Mare of Caraiman – Caraiman Cabana – Piatra Arsa Complex.

« Last year about 100 people participated, but this year I think there will be fewer. (…) The ascension will take about 3-5 hours, it is a very accessible route, even for children, » said Liviu Gaiță.

He also mentioned that, around the Day of the Romanian Army, which is celebrated in October, the mountain hunters will make an ascent in the Făgăraș Mountains to fly the tricolor flag on the Moldoveanu peak, the highest mountain fish in our country, thus carrying a tradition in 1996.
