The mayor of Istanbul, dismissed from office
The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, who is to be closed on Sunday for ‘corruption’, was dismissed, the Turkish Ministry of Interior announced, AFP reports.
« Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul (…) was suspended from functions, » the ministry announced in a statement.
« I will never give in, everything will be fine, » promised Ekrem Imamoglu, after the decision of the court to incarceration during the investigation for charges of ‘corruption’, notes Reuters and AFP.
In a message posted on the X network through his lawyers, the mayor, the main opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, appealed to his supporters ‘not to lose hope’ and ‘not to discourage’.
The mayor, who represents the opposition formation of CHP (the Republican Party of the People), remains in arrest in relation to the accusations of corruption that are brought to it, instead the justice rejected the request for incarceration for ‘terrorism’, says Reuters and AFP.
The mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu, accused of ‘corruption’, was incarcerated on Sunday at the Marmara prison, also known as the Silivri prison, on the outskirts of Istanbul, his party announced, AFP reports.
The mayor, arrested on Wednesday, was taken to this prison at the same time with several co-accused, according to the Turkish press.
