The Marines arrived in Los Angeles but still have no order to intervene
The Marine Battalion is already deployed in Los Angeles. Marine Corps commander General Eric Smith said the Marines were ready to follow the orders of the US North Command, but that they had not yet been called to intervene.
Smith said at a Senate budget debate that Marines are trained to control the crowd and that their equipment will include shields and batons. He stressed that they do not have the authority to make arrests and that Los Angeles are exclusively to protect federal property and federal staff.
A US North Command spokeswoman confirmed that the 700 Marines were deployed in the wider area of Los Angeles.
In the wider area of Los Angeles, approximately 2,100 members of the California National Guard are deployed. An additional 2,000 National Guard members were granted permission to deploy, but have not yet arrived in Los Angeles.
The US Department of Defense has said the deployment of the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles will cost about $ 134 million. According to Defense Minister Special Assistant Brin McDonell costs are mainly related to travel, accommodation and food.
