The lowest level of deadly violence in ten years

The number of cases of deadly violence decreased by 29 last year compared to 2023. This shows the Stathels from the Crime Prevention Council, Brå.

Manne Gerell, who researches, among other things, gang violence at Malmö University, explains that there is a clear reduction in the deadly violence but that it is difficult to point out exactly what the cause is.

– The statistics are interesting and show a sharp reduction in especially the areas Nord, Mitt and Stockholm. But it’s hard to say why it reduced so much last year, he says.

Firearm waslike the last few years, the most common method of violence and used in 45 cases of fatal violence, which is eight cases less than 2023. Knife or other stick weapons were the second most common method of violence and was used in 25 cases, 16 fewer than last year.

Of those who fell victim to deadly violence in 2024, 82 people were 18 years or older, which was 22 cases fewer than 2023. A total of 23 women and 69 men died as a result of violent crime.

But while the total cases decreased, Brå’s statistics show that the cases of deadly violence against relatives in a couple relationship increased. In 2023, 10 people died after violence in close relationship, in 2024 that figure was 13.

So what type of deadly violence is what has decreased?

Manne Gerell gives her analysis of the mode:

– That the violence with knife and firearms has reduced a less violent gang environment, which can be a partial factor. The Stockholm Police has worked a lot against gang crime, which may be visible now, he says and continues:

– The Foxtrot conflict, which was a major cause behind the wave of violence in the fall of 2023, has calmed down and partly moved abroad. But that conflict is relatively new and now we see the lowest figures in ten years so that may not be the whole explanation for the reduction, he says.
