Evelyn T. on her phase of radicalization

Even the tugs would have talked to her to go through the combat areas. However, her friend’s kinship had put pressure on her, took her mobile phone and pushed her on a onward journey. « You said that if I didn’t go on, take me to a Turkish women’s shelter. » The 26-year-old now told the Schöffensenat in the Vienna Criminal Court. The negotiating hall was filled to the last seat.

Arrived in the IS capital Raqqa, she was inferred: « You have to have a hundred percent hatred of unbelievers. » Her friend-who had already fought in Iraq at the time-had threatened her to report to the IS secret police if she did not follow it. Evelyn t.: « I was locked up in an apartment for months. I wasn’t even allowed to look out the window. » She was only allowed to leave the house accompanied by Qais Z. and only fully veiled.

With the birth of her son, she no longer endured it in the IS area. « I didn’t want my child to grow up in such a radicalized environment at IS. » With difficulty she was able to get her « husband » so far to try an departure. « If we were caught, there would have been the death penalty. » Ultimately, they were brought to a Kurdish base by tugs. There they were arrested and separated by the US-supported Kurdish militia, as the tugs would have predicted. Evelyn T. landed in the al-Roj camp. She lived there from the end of 2017 to February 2025.

The man threatens death

« I didn’t see my husband anymore, » said the accused now. This is currently said to be in an Iraqi prison. The death penalty is said to have been imposed on him.

Asked about the judge about life on the camp, Evelyn T. said that it has become increasingly difficult because more and more IS fighters had been captured over the years. « Those who were still for IS went around like the zombies. It was very bad. » And: « If you wanted to cook something, you first had to look for wood to make fire. » It was often cold. The available tents were heated by burning kerosene. Whole tents were burned more often. Once her baby had become seriously ill, got injections and the doctor told her that he could no longer do anything. « He said to me: » Now you have to hope that your child will survive.  »

« Do you have plans? » Asked the judge at the end. « I want to have my child back, » replied the young woman who was wearing her long, dark hair. The seven-year-old boy is currently in care at Vienna’s child and youth welfare (MA 11). And that revealed Evelyn T.: She wanted to be a zookeeper.
