The legendary Formula One champion revealed whether to continue his career. One factor will be decisive
Spaniard Fernando Alonso (43) is currently the oldest driver on Formula One Grid. The driver Aston Martin will turn 44 on July 29. Among the older drivers is still Lewis Hamilton (40). Rumors of the Spaniard’s retirement have already become a common thing, and now he has suggested that his 22-year career in Formula 1 could come to an end.
Aston Martin is currently ranked in the penultimate ninth place on the table according to the ranking of the teams. Last season they finished 5th with 94 points and at the beginning of the season everything looked like Aston Martin would be one of the dominant teams on the grid. This season they have only 16 points for now. Fernando Alonso has a contract with Aston Martin by 2026, and his future is uncertain after.
« I will drive as long as I feel fast and competitive and while the team needs me at the wheel, » Alonso said at the beginning of the season. In recent interviews, he said the quality of the new Aston Martin car will be key to his career decision.
« He’ll be very important, » he told the media.
This season, at nine races, Alonso only once scored in the top 10 drivers and scored points. He finished 9th in the great award of Spain. His team co -driver Lance Stroll missed the race in Spain due to his hand injury.
Fernando Alonso has enough time to decide whether to continue his career, and in the past he has already said goodbye to the formula eight years ago. The 2021 double champion returned to the racing trail as a Renault driver with whom he won the championship titles.
– I already retired in 2018, so I returned to Formula 1. So the next decision I make must be 100 percent safe, – he said.
He drove his first race in 2001 at the Grand Award of Australia, and during his career he achieved 32 victories and 106 podiums. He was the world champion for two years in a row in 2005 and 2006.
