The Latvian basketball team will be led by Sito Alonso / Day after the European Championship
Alonso will be taken over by Luka banks, whose contract will end after the European Championship and will prepare the team for the 2027 World Cup qualifying tournament.
Alonso and Jānis Gailītis were nominated for the position of head coach of the state unit, who were heard and evaluated by the Coaching Commission. The majority supported Alonso’s candidacy and the LBS Board accepted the proposal of the coaching commission.
49 -year -old Alonso is currently led by Spanish High League club Mursia UCAM, represented by Rodion Kuruc and recently played by his brother Arthur Kuruc. Alonso also worked with both brothers at the time of Barcelona and Vitoria’s Baskonia teams.
In Spain, Alonso has been the head coach of Badalona’s Joventut, Gipuzkoa and Bilbao. In the autumn of 2018, he worked in Croatian cube Zagreb’s Cedevita.
Alonso was also the head coach of the Spanish U-20 national team at the 2013 European Junior Championship, where his team lost to Latvians in the semi-finals and won bronze medals. He was also the assistant assistant of the Spanish national team at the 2014 World Cup.
Alonso will debut at the helm of the Latvian national team after the European Championship. After the continental championship, the next official match is scheduled for November, when the 2027 World Cup qualifying tournament will begin.
Banks became the head coach of the Latvian national team in 2021 and, under his leadership, the national team first entered the World Cup final, where he won fifth place.
