The largest floating glacier of the world stuck at the island of Atlantic, threatens millions of animals
The island of southern Georgia is the main and largest island of the British overseas territory of southern Georgia and the southern Sandwich Islands. It is home to millions of penguins and seals whose food could endanger the glacier. Now it is located about eighty kilometers from the mainland and, according to the observations, stuck in shallow waters by the island, reported BBC.
The floating glacier A23A is according to the diary The Times About twice as big as London, its thickness is 400 meters and weighs almost trillion tons. Kra separated from Antarctica in 1986 and moved to move last in December last year.
Ecologist Mark Belchier acting as an advisor to the government of South Georgia pointed out the disturbance of shipping and fishing. « If they break down, glacier fragments are likely to pose a risk to vessels because they would occur in local currents and could limit the access of boat to fishing areas, » Belchiera quoted.
However, glaciers may also be beneficial. They bring with them a huge number of minerals and nutrients that fertilize plankton. This can support the food chain of larger animals.
