The Investigator: The human rights of adopted have been violated

In 2021, DN revealed that children from poor families were stolen from their biological parents and adopted to Sweden. The truth about the children’s first time in life was manipulated to make them « adopted » on paper, and thousands of children have come here with incorrect information in their adoption documents.

After the review, the then Social Minister Lena Hallengren (S) appointed an adoption commission, led by Anna Singer, professor of civil law.

On Monday morning, she hands over the completed investigation to the government and responsible minister, Camilla Waltersson-Grönvall (M).

At DN Debate, Anna Singer already describes her conclusions and suggestions:

The investigation shows, she writes that « there have been irregularities in Swedish international adoption activities – everything from children’s trade to undocumented consent from a child’s guardian ».

The most extensive irregularities are about lack of legal security.

Anna Singer means that This has meant that it has « been not been able to ensure that the process has been legal, that adoption has been to the best interests of the child and that the person adopted has the opportunity to seek their origin ».

International adoptions to Sweden began in the 1950s and are still ongoing. In total, over 60,000 children have been adopted, from a majority of the world’s nations. The state investigation has, among other things, related adoption cooperation with Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Poland, China, South Korea, Colombia and Chile.

The investigator believes that the Swedish state should recognize the violation of adopted human rights, and apologize for not preventing it.

The adoption agency to Sweden should cease, Anna Singer states:

« International adoption agency, in my opinion, is no longer a sustainable solution for children as a group, and it is also not possible to ensure that there are no irregularities in the countries Sweden cooperates with ».

Furthermore, Anna Singer proposes that the state establish a national resource center that will offer call support and origin search, as well as a travel allowance to all internationally adopted.

Adoption Center, which has mediated 25,000 children to Sweden through their association, has had a representative in the investigation’s expert group. In a DN interview on Sunday – Before the debate article was published – they criticized the method and work of the Adoption Commission.

« The investigation seems to have driven a thesis that nothing has gone right, and found examples that support it, » said the former chairman of the Adoption Center Wilhelm Kaldo.

He does not believe that the investigator has been listening to the association, which has been working since 1969.

– They have not fixed on what is positive about adoption.
