The investigation into the garbage mafia has been completed. Indictment in court
Policemen from the Department for the Fight of Economic Crime of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Katowice completed long -term proceedings, which concerned an organized criminal group dealing with illegal trading and abandoning hazardous waste. According to Silesia police, the procedure lasted from December 2020 to the end of 2022 and covered the area of the Śląskie and Łódź provinces.
Eight people with allegations, one managed the gang
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice sent to the District Court in Częstochowa indictment against eight people aged 29 to 54. As established, the criminal group was organized, and a woman was headed.
The accused are accused of committing 16 crimes – mainly related to illegal waste managementtransport of hazardous substances, abandoning them and fraud to the detriment of leasing companies.
At the request of the prosecutor’s office Seven people were detained on remandpreventive measures of a milder nature were applied to the eighth.
Million costs of hazardous waste utilization
According to a spokesman for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice, prosecutor Michał Binkiewicz, waste constituting the subject of the proceedings contained substances with corrosive, irritating and carcinogenic properties. They were stored in mauser barrels and in containers completely not adapted to store this type of materials.
« Suspects’ behavior led to a direct threat to the life and health of many people and destruction in the plant and animal world » – emphasized prosecutor Binkiewicz.
Waste was abandoned in five different locations, including in storage halls and in areas without any environmental protection. These places must be properly secured, and the hazardous substances utilized, which is a huge challenge.
As a result of criminal activities The perpetrators abandoned at least 5,300 tons of waste containing, among others Carcinogenic and toxic substances. The cost of their disposal was estimated at around PLN 54 million.
