The inhabitants of Bard are still fighting the effects of a year ago
We went to Bard and asked people injured during the flood, in what situation they are and whether they are waiting for these apartments.
Flood is fighting for survival
The stories of the inhabitants of this town show how different the fate of those who were affected by the flood are. – My daughter bought this house in 2014, renovated it – Mariola Samlinna tells us. – There were rooms for the flood for rent here, launched a gastronomic point and there was also a office agency office here. Six people worked here. Unfortunately, after flooding it all is to be demolished. The dryings and protection of only one wall inside the building is 120 thousand. zloty. We hope that Polish waters will buy this object from us – he adds.
Bartosz Rąglot, who bought a flat on the ground floor of a former German house three years ago, has not lived in it for a year. « I got PLN 60,000 compensation, but renovation costs much more. You have to act alone, because it is not known who will be entitled to new apartments – he says and adds: new plasters are thrown, windows slowly, slowly, but we operate.
Ryszard Wiąciewicz (70 years old) and his wife decided that they would not return to their destroyed home. – We live from the flood with the wife of a wife in Dzierżoniów. After water destroyed their house for a second time, they decided that they would not renovate it for the third time. – We are waiting for houses to be built. The first messages said that they were to be created by the end of this year. My wife’s family home is always the most flooded. This was the case in 1997 and recently. In several other cases, firefighters saved the building, pumping in water. The water came just when we finished the renovation – he says.
Joanna Suchecka, whose house survived thanks to concrete ceilings and tiles on the floor, struggles with the lack of contractors for renovation. – Everyone will go out of employees. Younger people move out and we have no choice, we must stay. Where will I move now? – says.
Not everyone is satisfied with the amount of help received. Witold Ptak, who has lived in Bardo since birth, does not hide disappointment. – The insurer paid us only 38 thousand. PLN, although the policy was 800,000 zloty. The government promised support from 100 to 200 thousand. PLN, but from the commune we got a proposal of 58 thousand. PLN – he says. He blames the insurer. – They do everything to pay as little as possible. The flood at the bottom destroyed my workshop, kitchen and stoves. My wife is sick and we had a special large fridge for her medicines. The insurer does not care. We paid 20,000 for the bake for pellets PLN – he adds.
The injured residents are waiting for further support
The mayor of Barda, Marta Ptasińska, indicates that the trauma caused by the flood is still alive. – There are families who don’t want to go back to their homes. They are afraid of rivers and want to live in a safe place. For them, the « Słoneczna Przystań » estate is being built – he explains.
During a visit to Bardo, Magdalena Roguska, the Secretary of State at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, announced that the government will transfer over PLN 6 million to the area of the area for the planned housing estate. These funds are to cover the costs of connections, roads and infrastructure necessary to implement the investment. The total cost of building 40 new buildings is estimated at PLN 20 million.
The inhabitants of Bard hope that the new housing estate will allow to live in a safe place to those who have irretrievably destroyed their homes. The mayor of Ptasińska announces that children will return to the renovated school on September 1. – It will not only be rebuilt, but also adapted to the needs of people with disabilities – he adds.
However, for many residents the road to normality is still far away. Regardless of whether they decide to renovate their homes or moving to a new estate, one thing is certain: trauma after the flood will remain with them for a long time.
