The homage of Paris, the lights are extinguished, the Eiffel tower darkens at Pope Francis’s death.
The lights of the Eiffel Tower, the emblematic monument of Paris, will be extinguished this evening.
The announcement was made by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who transmitted, in a message that « Pope Francis never ceased to embody a universal message of solidarity, peace and humanity. »
In order to honor the memory of the Pontiff, the mayor of Paris also announced that he will propose a place in Paris to bear his name.
Anne Hidalgo stressed that « his commitment to a church that reaches the most vulnerable and his struggle for human dignity, especially for those who have nothing, have left their mark on our time. »
Pope Francis died at the age of 88
The pope’s death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber. The Vatican enters a period of 9 days of mourning, during which time daily prayer and liturgies of Requiem take place throughout the Catholic world.
The Argentinian became the first pope outside Europe in 1,300 years, when he was chosen to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who withdrew.
