Esmai (7 years old) began to complain about vision problems, but her mother did not think that it could be something so serious.
Sophie Evans, 35-year-old from Tean, near Stoke-on-Trent, in January 2024 took her 7-year-old daughter to an optics. The child told his mother that he saw strange stains. Then the optometrist did not notice anything wrong. A year later there was a drama. Another visit to the optics in January this year. She showed swelling on visual nerves. The 7-year-old was diligently directed to the emergency department. The diagnosis was shocking. The lining tumor, which was detected in Esmai, was already so large that it distorted its part of the brain. Despite this, the girl did not have any typical symptoms, such as headaches, weight loss or learning problems.

Esmai underwent a complicated tumor removal operation at the Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool. The treatment was successful, but this is not the end of the fight for the girl’s health. Currently, it undergoes intensive radiotherapy at the Proton beam therapy center in Manchester. Unfortunately, in the case of such cancers there are up to 35 percent. The risk that the disease may return within 10 years.
Mother’s Appeal: Regular vision tests can save lives

– I don’t think anyone thinks about taking children for sight tests at this age, unless symptoms appear. I think I wouldn’t do it if Esmai did not tell me that she saw stains, ‘she said in an interview with The Independent.
Despite the success of surgery, the 35-year-old mother is worried about the future of her daughter. « Esmai seems restless and terrified of what can wait for her, » he adds.
Her story is a reminder how important it is not to underestimate even seemingly harmless symptoms in children. Regular controls can save lives.
