The High Court in Catalonia overturned the conviction of Dania Alves
The Catalonia Active Court acquitted the former football star of the Brazilian national team and the Spanish giant Barcelona Dania Alveswho was sentenced to rape in the first instance in February 2024.
A year ago, the Barcelona Court sentenced 41-year-old Alves to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault on a young woman at the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona on the last day of 2022. It was one of the first major cases in Spain after renewing sexual assault legislation.
The Catalonia Active Court stated in a press release that there were numerous shortcomings, inaccuracies and contradictions in the conviction, which was held in February last year.
All four judges of the High Court voted to annul the conviction on the basis of a lack of well -founded doubt.
The Barcelona court approved a temporary release from prison when paying security last year, a month after his conviction. The prosecution and the law team complained about such a decision, but they dismissed their appeal, so that Alves was at large.
Following the decision to temporarily relent from prison, the court deprived him of both passports, Brazilian and Spanish, and also had to report a weekly court. The Brazilian paid the woman compensation in the amount of € 150,000.
Alves played 126 matches for the Brazilian species. He achieved the greatest club success in the Barcelona jersey, with it winning the European Champions League three times. In Spain, he also played for Sevilla, in Italy for Juventus, in France for PSG, in Mexico for Pumas, and in his homeland for Bahia and São Paulo.
