The gold is ground with an old power plant
« The power plant is an important pillar in farming here and gives us a lot, » says Ketill Ingvar Tryggvason, farmer at Hallgilsstaðir in Fnjóskadalur. In many parts of the South Thingeyjarsýsla, towns are so that towns stand under high slopes where streams from the spring mountains flow down. In these circumstances, it comes out well to install small power plants, as was often the case in these areas 80-90 years ago. There came Bjarni Runólfsson’s ingenuity in Holm in Landbrot, which designed and appeared in many of such stations in the north and in Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla, as geographical conditions are often similar.
The power plant in Hallgilsstaðir is from 1956; The work of Björn Þórhallsson, a hobbyist on Ljósavatn, which is not far from there. The station can produce 35 kw. Another with some smaller power was there, as Hallgilsstaða farmers quickly realized that there were opportunities in this place. The town stands under a high mountain slope and the falls from the input of the pipes down to the station house is a total of 110 meters. The amount of water is also well -versed and the possibilities are great.
« The power plant turns endlessly; this is like an eternal machine. I could believe the energy companies that the farming here is two million ISK a year.
At Hallgilsstaðir there is a heat utility, a pipeline from Reykir in Fnjóskadalur which is about 15 kilometers away. Houses on the farm therefore enjoy the geothermal heat – which Ketill says will be much. « When the heat utility arrived, there was less need for electricity, which today needs lighting and home appliances. These are no creatures, » says the farmer and smiles. Residents in the neighboring land of Solvang also receive electricity from the power plant in Hallgilsstaðir and in Ancient, which is the next town, is also a power plant. Here people may save themselves and it can be said that gold is ground with the old power plant.
Small power plants are wide and experience is good
In recent years, small power plants have been installed in recent years, and experience of it is usually good. There is a considerable amount of farmers, those who have built, own and operate the power plants, sell the production into the transport system and to the large energy companies. There is a big market and demand is high. Electricity sales are gold equivalent, and even better.
« Of course, of course, such power plants deliver such power plants and if you use electricity just for their own use at home on farms. Energy farming for their own needs is farming that pays off and it could be borne in mind that, for example, horticultural farmers talk about difficulties due to high electricity prices. Tryggvason at Hallgilsstaðir.
