From the early morning hours among the crowds of pilgrims heading to St. Piotr could be seen white and red flags. Poles, including many young people, came to the Vatican to personally say goodbye to Pope Francis.
Pilgrims from Poland say goodbye to the Pope
Among pilgrims from Poland are, among others Teachers and students of a Catholic school in Marki who came to Rome with a white and red flag. « We want to say goodbye to our dear Pope Francis, » they said.
An extremely touching story was told by Janusz, who came to the Vatican in a traditional Krakow costume with his wife Anna and daughter Małgosia. The family met Pope Francis five times. « The Pope then gave her a teat to her mouth, » says Janusz, describing the first meeting when his daughter was only seven months old.
Janusz’s family also participated in celebrations related to the 40th anniversary of the election of Karol Wojtyła to the capital of St. Piotr. Then Francis prayed for a long time before the icon of the Black Madonna, which they brought to him. « That’s why – as Janusz confessed – we had to come here to say goodbye to him today. »
« The atmosphere is raised, so community, because youth arrives, people from all over the world come » – one of the Polish women present in the Vatican told the reporter « Fakt.pl ».
« This is an immortal moment and we want to remember her. There are a lot of Poles » – added a young Pole, who also came personally the farewell to Pope Francis.

The Polish accent at the funeral ceremonies of Pope Francis was clearly present also during the liturgy itself. During the mass, a universal prayer was read for deceased popes in Polish.

Interestingly, the reporter of « Fakt » present in the Vatican drew attention to a surprising thing. Although Pope Francis came from Argentina, the lack of Argentine flags among the crowds gathered on the streets immediately strikes on the streets of the Vatican.
– I haven’t seen a single one – reports our journalist Piotr Drabik. « They are from Lebanon, Poland or Ireland, » he adds.
