The fool of the republic

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, yesterday, upon receiving his French counterpart on an official visit, gave another sign of indecency and lack of sense of state, behaving not as the highest magistrate of the nation, as his obligation would be, but as a true fool of this decrepit republic, a number to which, by the way, has used to us in recent times.

It began by coercing Macron at an undecided piston, forcing him to catch a brave wet during the provision of the military honors, without being prior to a way to prevent this disorder caused by a strong rain, meteorological phenomenon that was more than expected.

This recklessness led the French President to fulfill a significant part of the completely soaked day program, submitting to an embarrassing, perfectly unnecessary disposition.

Then he let himself walk with his guest holding hands, as if they were two boyfriends, a very common gesture in the East, which represents respect for the person we have by our side, but anecdotal with European culture.

Yes, we may like the new US President or not, and he, as we well know, does not shy away from offering many of us reasons to be suspicious of his aptitude for the position he holds, but that was the choice of his fellow citizens and through a vote that this time did not leave any margin for doubt.

Marcelo has an obligation to know that by attacking his US homologist, even if eventually he may have hit the criticism he is not only putting in check the White House tenant, but also the country he represents.

It turns out that the Portuguese President has no constitutional competence on foreign policy, and the government only has the definition of the parameters in which Portugal's relations with other sovereign states must be exercised.

Marcelo is no longer commentator, a reality that seems to be completely forgotten, so his opinions, when related to our foreign policy, and especially when given in the presence of another foreign president, do not only bind him to him, but to the Portuguese State.

Portugal has been extremely careful in relations with the countries with which they have affinities, especially with those who welcome a large number of our countrymen, and always avoiding any position that can be understood as interference with their internal policies, including those who have been referenced as examples of despotism and corruption.
