The fish connects Canada and Iceland

The Canadian company Organic Ocean Seafood in Vancouver specializes in purchases, processing, packaging and selling the best possible seafood from Canada, Peru, Mexico and Japan. Dane Chaval founded the company together with Steve Johansen in 2008 and recently entered into a partnership agreement with the software company Learncove, which is the first contract the Icelandic company makes with a company in Canada.

Organic Ocean Seafood has used LearnCove solutions successfully since late last year. Dane is on its way to the Barcelona Fisheries Exhibition and decided to stop in Iceland last weekend and meet Learncove’s executives. He also visited fisheries companies and fell for Icelandic seafood in restaurants.

« Icelandic fish is particularly good and I envision the import of Icelandic seafood to Vancouver with the distribution of our market in mind, » he says.

The mark Dane emphasizes sustainable fishing.

Increased competitiveness

Learncove’s uniqueness is to assist the management of fisheries companies in managing training, processes, registration and audits. Aðalheiður Hreinsdóttir, founder and CEO of Learncove, points out that many different languages are spoken by fisheries companies in Iceland, but LearnCove has automatic language support in 136 languages.

Learncove’s system also makes it possible to train the staff so that it realizes the importance of quality in all areas and know what needs to be done at work in order to make the quality of seafood as much as possible. Another part relates to processes and registrations. Every day, for example, the day needs to be started by checking if the area has been cleaned well enough to prevent infection, ensure that the temperature is correct and registered that all devices have been reviewed and they are properly adjusted before processing begins. Various samples need to be taken during the day to monitor that all processing is going as well as possible.

« These are all registrations that fisheries companies need to show in audits, » Aðalheiður emphasizes. Collaboration with Organic Ocean Seafood is about the registration to begin with and she says the agreement is important. « We are very lucky with our first customers in Canada. » They have gained insight into various needs in the Canadian company market and adapted their services to those needs. « It has greatly facilitated our conversation in preparation for cooperation with others in the United States and Canada. »

Glenn Sigurdson, Iceland’s focal officer in Vancouver, took the initiative in the communication and Dane is grateful to his friend for the tip. Learncove employees have taken the work firmly, worked quickly and safely and come up with solutions that suit the Organic Ocean Seafood very well. « The software allows us to improve the work processes, the work will be easier and more efficient and more competitive. »

To begin with, the company’s sales were only in Vancouver but now extends from coast to beach in Canada and also to Southeast Asia. « The business has increased rapidly, » says Dane.
