The first tram line is complete

The first tram line is complete: on Sunday morning the section was officially inaugurated from the Luxexpo to Findel. The tram now drives from Stade de Luxembourg to the airport.

That is a total of twelve kilometers with 24 stations and ten pôles d'échaange. Two new stops have been added to the new section of 3.9 kilometers: Héienhaff P&R and Findel – Luxembourg Airport. « The tram overcomes a key stage of the expansion and thus increases the attractiveness of public transport, » says Minister of Mobility Yuriko Backes (DP) on Sunday morning.

Incidentally, the tram officially drove between the Luxexpo and the Rout Bréck Pafendall stop on December 10, 2017. On July 27, the tram drove to Place de l'Etoile and on December 13, 2020 then via Place Hamilius to the main train station.

Almost 110 million passengers have used the tram since the opening, in the first year it was 4.7 million and this number rose to 31.7 million in 2024.

Later than planned

The tram should drive to Findel in the course of 2020: at least that was the plan when the 2013 project was presented. However, this date should always move backwards. In October 2017, there was already talk in a publication by the Ministry from early 2024.

The « Luxemburger Word » then wrote in 2019 of a completion for 2022. In September 2020, the date was then moved to 2023, in spring 2023 there was a new change with a potential opening at the end of 2024.

The Ministry of Mobility then spoke of completion for the winter of 2024/2025 in the summer of 2023. In the end it became March 2 of this year. FWA

The tram has not yet reached the end. The planning for the further routes run. Work on the expansion towards Kirchberg recently started. From the 2027 Rentrée in the new district of Laangfur, the Rentrée 2027 is 2.3 kilometers.

The expansion between the Stade de Luxembourg and the strong plaz is also planned. At the end of 2030, early 2031, the tram is to drive over the route d'Esch and the boulevard Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. Some time later – 2032 – the connection between the strong plaz and the Chl is expected.

The expansion from the main train station towards Hollerich is to be tackled in 2027 and two years later the tram is to drive there.

The date on Sunday morning was not the last official inauguration for the coming years.
