The first modern grill / day

Although grilling as a culinary technique has been known since pristine times, the modern grill as a commercial product was created only in the middle of the 20th century in the United States.

The first modern grill was made by George Steven in 1952. He was a metalworking worker at the company Weber Brothers Metal Works. Legend has it that Steven was « tired » of the flat open grills, where the meat often burned or did not completely bake, and they were insecure – with the open fire flames they often burned the meat grillers themselves. As a welder, Steven welded his first round, three feet -based grill with a lid. Inside the grill ball, he put a metal grid that kept the food over the fire.

This simple invention improved the grilling process, making it more efficient and safer. This allowed to control the temperature and avoid direct contact with the flames, which until then was a problem in traditional grills of that time. Steven also added vents, which allowed it to control the airflow easier.

It was difficult to control the temperature of the grills without the lid because the heat flowed and the grilling was uneven. The grill with the lid retained the heat inside and allowed the food to cook evenly. It also provided a faster cooking time as it helped to concentrate heat and vapor inside. Meat, vegetables and other products reached the desired degree of maturity faster.

The cover helped prevent the need for frequent modifying and moving food, as the cover was preparing from all sides evenly due to the cover. It was convenient to make larger pieces, such as steaks or ribs that could have been burned from the outside so far, but insufficiently bake inside.

The cover also protected food against wind and dirt. The new grills could be cooked regardless of external conditions. The cover also allowed to concentrate and preserve the smoke aroma, which gave the meat and other dishes a richer taste.

Its invention of Steven became a revolution in the world of grilling. He immediately patented it and immediately received a patent in 1952.

Steven grill became the basis for later popular Weber Grill brand. Steven created this brand as a paid employee working in the company Weber Brothers Metal Worksbut later became the company Weber-Stephen Products co -owners. The new approach invented by Steven was not only more practical, but also easier for every consumer. The design he created was so successful that he became the standard in the modern grill in the world.

Steven himself became a very successful and rich man. Initially, grill production was quite a small business, but the growing demand allowed the business to expand. To this day Weber is one of the leading grill brands in the world.
