The films made with the help of artificial intelligence will be able to win the Oscars
The Academy, organizer of the prizes, has introduced new rules for the next edition
The use of artificial intelligence in a film « It does not help or penalize » The chances of conquering an Oscar nomination. With three rows in italics, inserted within a series of new rules for the next edition of the prizes, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has actually established that The films made with the help of AI will be able to win the Oscara question widely debated this year, after Adrien Brody’s victory for best actor for « The Brutalist », as well as one of the major problems at the center of the strikes that paralyzed Hollywood in 2023.
« In relation to generative artificial intelligence And to other digital tools used in making a film, these tools do not help or penalize the possibilities of conquering a nomination – says the new regulation of the Oscar organizer -. The Academy will evaluate the result, taking into consideration the degree of human involvement within the creative process, in choosing which film to reward ».
The artistic contribution of the people will therefore have a weight in weighing the candidates, but this new wording, introduced « on the recommendation of the Council of Science and Technology of the Academy », means that access to the prizes is not precluded to the films made with the contribution of the AI, without clarifying to what extent it can be used.
The theme had turned on strong controversy in March, By involving both « The Brutalist », by Brady Corbet, and « Emilia Pérez » by Jacques Audiard, two of the leading films of the last edition of the Oscars: in both cases an Ai software, Respeeccher, was used to « arrange » some dialogues. In « The Brutalist » the intervention concerned the voices of the protagonists, Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, of English native speakers, to perfect their pronunciation in Hungarian.
Same tool was used on Karla’s voice Sofía Gascón, protagonist of the musical « Emilia Pérez ». But if in this second case other scandal (the one for her discriminatory tweets, re -emerged from the past) cost her the victory at the Oscars, Brody was instead rewarded as the best actor, raising a swarm of protests that questioned the authenticity and merit of his interpretation thus « adjusted ».
The new rule, on the one hand, protects The Academy from this kind of controversy (and also from possible legal implications), but on the other it appears as a break for the unions, to which many screenwriters and authors refer, worried that artificial intelligence can replace their work, as well as actors and actresses who fear see their own image or voice used without their full control.
The guidelines that have been approved For the 98th edition of the Oscars they also enter on other fronts: among the various things, refugee directors or asylum seekers can be nominated for the best international film, the category of the best casting will be introduced and, first of all, the voters will have to watch all the films in the run for a certain category, in order to be able to take part in the final vote. A rule that, surprisingly, was not compulsory so far, but on which it remains difficult to supervise.
